LEEDS-BRADFORD MCCU IN SOUTH AFRICA – MARCH 2010 (2)

15 March 2010

SATURDAY 13 MARCH – SUN DAY 14 MARCH

The first practice session was held at Scorpions CC at the Oude Veritas ground. The ground was next to the Distell Winery and we were greeted by four enormous vine vats as we drove up the drive. On getting out of the bus, one or two of the players remarked on the pleasant smells flirting with their nostrils. This was not surprising as the odour of developing wine was all-pervading. The bottom of the ground was one huge warehouse where boxes of wines were sealed and stored ready for delivery. Stellenbosch claims to be in the heart of the South African wine-producing area and, given the number of vineyards we have passed moving between Stellenbosch and Cape Town, one could not legitimately argue.

Craig Williamson made 21 for Leeds/Bradford MCCU.

To Sunday 14 March and our game against Hampshire. The County side was a mixture of all calibres and all ages but that included several regular first teamers. At one point, at 175-7, Leeds-Bradford MCCU had held their own with good ground fielding and catches held. However, Chris Wood and David Balcombe then decided to lay about them and added another 40 runs rapidly.

The Leeds-Bradford MCCU reply never got going with Chris Dougherty out to the third ball of the innings and wickets falling at regular intervals after that. Craig Willamson enhanced his reputation with; he and Sam Burge added the highest partnership of the innings for the seventh wicket.
